The downtown MTA transit station on Harrison St. was built 15 years ago. Now, the whole station is getting a makeover. Financed by state and federal grants, this renovation will cost approximately $6 million ($2 million and $4 million respectively) - about as much as the cost of initially building the station.

The improved center will feature state-of-the-art Intelligent Transporation System technology to provide riders with very accurate arrival times and local artists will have a hand in the building's interior and exterior appearance.

The planned 11- by 38-foot Community Bulletin Board will be able to list up to 48 events and will also have a scrolling ticker to display higher profile events.

Pending legal approval, the transit center will be host to a tribute to Rosa Parks - an icon in the civil rights movement.

Construction is expected to start later this year, wrapping up towards the end of 2006.
