Formerly Hughes & Hatcher, the Land Bank Center is well under construction on Saginaw Street. The goal is to be finished sometime this fall.

This building is owned by the Genesee County Land Bank - an agency that speeds up the process of acquiring and demolishing, fixing up or selling properties that are well behind on tax payments. The Hughes & Hatcher building was one of them, but instead of selling the building, the Land Bank decided to invest and move into the building.

Other than Land Bank offices, there will be other office space available in the building that's being constructed into looking like two separate buildings. Like many other developments downtown, this one will feature apartment lofts - eight, in total - and over 3,500 square feet of retail space at street level.

If things work out, the Land Bank Center will feature a grocery store - something that many people feel is necessary to make downtown Flint livable. Nothing is set in stone in regards to this.

Revenue from the refurbished building will go directly back to the Land Bank, enabling it to improve its award-winning program without relying solely on tax-payers money.

The project is costing an estimated $3.8 million.
